How Sound Effects and Music Can Help Your Video, Film & Podcast Content

Hey all! This month we are exploring the topic: How Sound Effects and Music Can Help Your Video, Film & Podcast Content.

When starting a project, most people are thinking about what the content is and what it looks like, rightfully so. But it’s also important to think about what type of music and sound effects will enhance the mood you are looking to create.

For example, if you have a shot of a person walking through the woods. If you added music that is inspirational, fun & hokey or scary, there would definitely be different feelings that the audience would evoke.

Now, think about that shot of the person walking through the woods. There really isn’t any indication of the environment that they are in. That’s where sound effects come in. The sound effects help the viewer understand what is surrounding the subject, often times things that are off-camera.

So how do you best explain to your production team what you are looking for?

  1. Provide samples of other things you have heard
  2. Describe the mood. Do you want it happy? Or scary? Or emotive?
  3. Remember to mention if there is a genre you like, pop, jazz, orchestral, this will also help your team start to find or create the right type of music.
